Girls show versatility in win over BP

The Montezuma Bravettes are balanced.

No, not like gymnasts – well, some of them might be – but like a good basketball team.

They offer multiple skills and showed them off in a 78-29 run past Belle Plaine in a makeup game at home Thursday, Feb. 6.

Versatile forward Shateah Wetering had another big game, scoring 36 points. But that wasn’t half of Montezuma’s total. Eight other players produced 42 more points.

There was major production in other statistical categories.

Our team is evolving into a balanced attack,” said Coach Janel Burgess. “Our ladies are confident in their roles and always have their hands ready to make the shots they are given.”

Wetering’s 36 came on 15-for-22 shooting from the field and five-for-five from the foul line. She added a team-high eight rebounds, and had four assists, a three-pointer and a steal.

Forward Dylan Holland scored 11 points on five-for-seven field goal shooting. She added three rebounds, four steals and two deflections.

Guard Maddy McKeag scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds, splashed down a pair of three-pointers, had two steals, a deflection and an assist.

Guard Carissa Van Zee scored five points, had five rebounds, hit a trey, had two steals and a deflection.

Guard Elise Boulton had five points, but led with five assists.

Speaking of assists, the Bravettes had 16 of them, by seven different players, on 30 made field goals.

I am proud of our assists right now,” Burgess said. “The last couple games we have had more than 15 assists in each, which shows great ball movement and team unity.”

Shanae Wetering goes high for two.

Montezuma led 26-5 after one quarter, 41-9 at halftime, and 51-27 through three periods.

The Bravettes extended their record to 18-1. Belle Plaine is at 9-11.

Let the fun continue!” Burgess said.

UP NEXT – The Bravettes play their final conference game Friday, Feb. 7, at Lynnville-Sully.
