NEW SHARON – With all the bad weather we’ve had, Montezuma’s track and field athletes were ready for an afternoon and evening in the sun in New Sharon on Thursday, April 6.

The weather was wonderful and our girls came ready to compete!” said Montezuma Coach Megan Carlson.

Several girls had season- and lifetime-best performances, which are fun to see and hopefully we can continue to grow on those marks throughout the season,” the coach said.

The battle for the team title was ferocious, with just 7.5 points separating the fourth-place Bravettes from team champion Pella Christian. In between came North Mahaska and Colfax-Mingo.

We were able to get all of the girls in an event and didn’t really focus on winning the team title,” Carlson said.

The Bravettes showed depth in the sprints, improved performances in the field events, and emerging strength in the hurdles and middle distances.

Freshman Chloe Snook won the 200-meter dash and placed second in the 100.

Montezuma’s other win was in the 4×800, by Claire Erselius, Kami Mathes, Ellen Cook and Mia Boulton.

The Bravettes had a number of second-place performance, which are covered in the event summary below.

‘”We need to continue to use our meets as training opportunities to prepare for the championship portion of the season,” Carlson said. “I am proud of the efforts by the girls and excited to see what they can do in the coming weeks.”
