The Montezuma girls have become a versatile, multi-skilled team. Those talents were on display – and needed – in a 79-47 win at home over Lynnville-Sully on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

The Hawks have a talented duo up front the Bravettes had to keep track of. Mallory Loftus and Krystal Van Dyke produced, with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Each side shot .526 from the field. But Montezuma was able to put up 19 more shots from the field.

Then there was Montezuma’s balance: Seven girls scored between four and eight points.

And . . . Shateah Wetering dropped 32 points and more on the Hawks.

“Our selfless play tonight was something special,” said Montezuma Coach Janel Burgess.

Montezuma’s pressuring full-court defense led to 20 Hawk turnovers, compared with nine by the Bravettes.

Montezuma also had a 28-16 bulge on the boards, which included a 16-5 edge on offensive rebounds.

Montezuma led 15-12 after one quarter, but opened the second period with a 12-0 run.

Up 33-20 at halftime, the Bravettes went on a 6-0 run to start the third period and never looked back. Montezuma outscored the Hawks 46-27 in the second half.

“We played very solid on the defensive end, which created many offensive opportunities for us,” Burgess said.

Montezuma was a stunning 20-for-31 from two-point range. That’s a .645 percentage.

Shateah Wetering’s 32 came on 11-for-19 from the field and seven-for eight from the line. She made a trio of treys, dished nine assists, had five steals, six rebounds, a deflection and two blocked shots.

Cheering on the Bravettes.

Elise Boulton scored nine points for the Bravettes, had four assists and three steals.

Maddy McKeag, Shanae Wetering and Mia Boulton each scored eight points. Shelby Conger had six. Carissa Van Zee and Dylan Holland scored four each.

Holland and Conger had five and four rebounds, respectively.

“I love seeing the growth our ability to push tempo on the offensive end while maintaining great ball control,” Burgess said.

The Hawks suffered their second loss against five wins.

The 16 points by Loftus came on seven-for-10 shooting, including two-for-three on treys.

Van Dyke’s 14 came on seven-for-eight from the field.

The Bravettes took their record out to 7-0, with a big one on tap Thursday against once-beaten (by bigger school Washington) Sigourney.
