MONTEZUMA – Their first game, at the start of the season, was close, with the Montezuma girls pulling away late to win.
For this second game, the stakes were a bit higher. The Bravettes were still hanging in there with the #7 ranking in Class 1A. But Lynnville-Sully had won 12 games, and came in at #10.
The result was the same, the Bravettes using a 17-11 fourth quarter to take a 58-48 victory on Tuesday evening, Jan. 21, at home.
But, the overall quality of play was better, and this game was getting more attention, regionally and beyond.
Important this time for the Bravettes was shooting – .463 from the field, one of their best of the season, which included 12-for-27 on three-pointers.
The Bravettes’ ball movement was good. They assisted 14 of their 19 field goals.
We don’t have Lynnville-Sully stats as of this writing, but we’re certain they included some really positive numbers.
Bravettes guard Claire Erselius scored 17 points, hitting 6-for-13 from the field, including five-of-11 from behind the arc.
Guard Vivian Cook scored 13, on 4-for-10 overall with 4-for-9 on treys.
Senior point guard Ellen Cook scored 10 – 3-for-6 overall from the field and 2-for 4 on treys.
The Hawks led 12-10 after one quarter and it was tied at 26 at halftime. Montezuma forged ahead 41-37 after three.
Syd Burgess grabbed 10 rebounds , blocked 4 shots and had 2 steals for Montezuma.
Ellen Cook had 4 rebounds and 5 steals. She also had 7 assists, and an assists to turnovers ratio of 3.5 to one.
Erselius had 4 rebounds and 3 steals.
The win pushed Montezuma to 10-4 on the season.
Lynnville-Sully is at 12-4.
