A popular favorite event is back with a new name, but with the same purpose: To help raise money for Montezuma’s football program.
This year, it will be called the First Annual Scott Maschmann Memorial, and it will take place on Saturday, June 24, at Montezuma Country Club.
Prior to this year, it was called the Dennis Simpson Classic.
This year’s event will include “food, a silent auction, a hole-in-one contest, a long drive contest and much more,” said Braves football Coach John Beck.
Money raised goes to provide “extras” above and beyond the school system’s budget.
Why the name change? Beck said at last summer’s event, “Denny Simpson’s family reached out to the (football) program to let us know they would like us to honor another former Brave, the late Scott Maschmann, and his family with our annual fundraiser,” Beck wrote in an announcement also signed by the football coaching staff.
“Denny (Simpson) was one of Montezuma’s best fans and was always heard cheering on the Braves,” Beck wrote. “We have been proud and honored to have our annual golf outing bear the name, “Dennis Simpson Classic” and we will always continue to represent Montezuma the way Denny would have remembered.”
“Just like Denny, Scott was an avid Braves fan, hardly ever missing a Braves football game,” Beck continued. “Scott and his family have long ties to the program. Scott was a captain for the Braves under Coach (Darrell) Brand. Braves Football is proud to have our golf outing take his name.”
“Thank you to the Simpson family for all you have done for our program and for passing the torch to another great family to honor another great Brave!”
The golf outing is organized by the football program and is sponsored by a variety of businesses.
The tournament is a four-person best shot event. Registration will start at 8 a.m. on June 24, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
Cost for each teams is $160 ($40 per player).
Lunch will be provided for all participants. There also will be a silent auction.
