OSKALOOSA – When last did Montezuma win a boys SICL golf team championship?
Did the Braves ever win that title?
Yes, in 1972, said Activities Director Tim Burgess, and Al Rabenold produced the team photo to prove it.
And this year’s team has the championship plaque – and unanimous acclaim – to prove what it accomplished on a windy Monday afternoon, May 9.
Along the way, senior Eddie Burgess shot an 81 to reign as meet medalist and SICL individual champion.
The Braves shot an 18-hole team score of 352, beating Keota by seven strokes. Keota had finished ahead of Montezuma as recently as Friday, at the Roger Fread Invitational a few miles up the road in New Sharon.
Burgess was tough and so were his teammates. Montezuma had three of the low six scorers – Cruz De Jong was fourth at 88 and Maguire De Jong was sixth at 90.
There were 36 golfers in all, representing all of the SICL’s schools.
Several Braves were honored on the all-SICL teams: First team – Eddie Burgess (unanimous), Maguire De Jong, Cruz DeJong. Second team – Jack Erselius. Honorable mention – Owen Cook and Tod Geiger.
UP NEXT – For the Braves is the sectional meet, where the Braves are defending champions. The meet will be played Wednesday, May 11, in Traer.
