Golfers might again be special this season

Maguire De Jong lines up a putt.

It could be another banner year for Montezuma golf.

Last season, the boys won their first South Iowa Cedar League Tournament championship in 25 years.

They went on to capture their second straight district title and just missed a berth in the state tournament.

Top player Eddie Burgess graduated from that team. But a lot of talent returns, including several players who achieved meet medalist honors on occasion.

Included are all-SICL first teamers Maguire De Jong and Cruz De Jong, second team all-SICL player Jack Erselius and honorable mention all-league players Owen Cook and Todd Geiger.

Carsten James, another player who scored well in some varsity meets, also returns, as do Alex Black and Max Anderson, and they’re beng joined by some promising newcomers.

Montezuma’s girls placed fourth in the SICL meet, but right now, they need two more players to have a team whose score can count as a team score.

But, Abby Pope and Madalyn Fleming can compete as individuals.

Liesl Roorda and Randy Masterson are co-head coaches of the overall group of golfers.
