Golfers open with victories

By Coach Liesl Roorda

On a warm and windy Monday afternoon, April 5, Montezuma golfers were able to claim both the girls and boys team titles in the first meet of the season, held at Montezuma Country Club.

North Mahaska and Lynnville Sully joined Montezuma on the home course.

All three teams have many young and new-to-golf members who saw their first competition.  The wind direction and speed added additional obstacles for all the golfers to overcome and had some golfers taking some new approaches to the greens.

Lynnville Sully’s Greenlee Smock took girls’ medalist honors, shooting a 43.  Ronni Layman from North Mahaska was runner-up medalist with a 50.

Montezuma’s four varsity young lady golfers all bettered their scores significantly from last week’s qualifying round with the best score a 51 by freshman Chloe Hutchcraft.  The Montezuma girls were the only ones with four golfers to score as a team for the meet.

Montezuma’s Maguire DeJong took medalist honors on the boys’ side with a 43.  North Mahaska’s Blake Readshaw was runner-up medalist, also with a 43.

Montezuma boys won the team competition, shooting a 178.  North Mahaska shot a team 185 and Lynnville Sully a 207.    Montezuma JV golfers turned in a 187 combined.

NEXT UP – the golfers travel to Colfax for competition with Colfax-Mingo and HLV on Thursday, April 8.
