LYNNVILLE – Montezuma’s golfers got away to a great start on their season in their opening meet on Monday, April 4, at Diamond Trail Golf Club.
“Our first meet found our boys and girls teams coming out on top over Lynnville-Sully (team score 209) and North Mahaska (190),” said Montezuma co-head Coach Liesl Roorda.
Montezuma’s score: 167, “which is a great place to start for the competition season,” Roorda said.
Eddie Burgess was meet medalist with a nine-hole score of 40, with Cruz De Jong as runner-up at 42.
Jack Erselius also shot 42, but “was carded out of the runner-up position,” Roorda said. But, his score counted toward the team total.
Maguire De Jong shot 43 as the Montezuma boys posted the top four scores for the meet.
Other Braves scores were a 45 for Owen Cook and 56 for Carsten James.
For the girls, Chloe Hutchcraft was meet runner-up medalist with a 53.
The Bravettes had four of the five top scores. Madalyn Fleming shot 61, as did Aislyn Hutchcraft. Abby Pope shot a 65.
UP NEXT – Montezuma hosts on Thursday, April 7, at Montezuma Country Club. “We hope for a clear day where we can continue to compete and improve,” Roorda said.
MY BAD – Your editor apologizes for leaving out a line about Cruz De Jong in my recent golf preview story. In the editing process, my eyes must have skipped over the line, and I didn’t catch it. The line is a quote from Roorda:
“Cruz De Jong comes back for his sophomore year after working hard out of season and playing a few varsity meets last year. We’d like to see him step up as a big contributor.”
Well, he stepped up pretty big in this meet, with a runner-up medalist score of 42!
Cruz, sorry about that!
I hate it when that happens. It shows my (considerable) age! – Keith Brake
