The cavalry finally rode for Montezuma.

But it was too late to make the rescue.

The Bravettes, down 42-28 to a sharp-shooting, patient Lynnville-Sully team through three quarters, got to within four points with 30 seconds left to play.

But no closer, and the Hawks flew home with the prize, a 52-46 win over the Bravettes on Tuesday evening, Nov. 28, in Montezuma.

Now, the Bravettes face another tough assignment, at North Mahaska on Friday, Dec. 1.

It was a very physical game against a very well-coached team,” said Bravettes Coach Janel Burgess. “I was extremely proud of our fight and and our growth from the beginning of the game to the end,” she said.

The Hawks were judicious with their shot selection. They cast up just 28 attempts, but connected on 16 of them, a .580 percentage.

The Bravettes were 17-for-50, a .340 average.

Several major categories – like rebounding – were close. But the Bravettes were guilty of three more personal fouls, and the Warhawks led 15 to 6 in points from the free throw line. That was enough to get ahead – and stay ahead – of Montezuma.

The Hawks led 12-9 after one quarter, 26-18 at halftime, then outscored Montezuma 16-10 in the third quarter to take a 42-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

Lynnville-Sully’s victory ended a 13-game Bravettes winning streak in this rivalry.

Ellen Cook led Montezuma with 12 points. Vivian Cook had 11.

Post player Shiressa Wetering scored 10, but constant defensive pressure cut her effectiveness, as she was 5-for-16 from the field. She also had problems from the free throw line.

Jadyn Sharer turned in a solid 8-point performance, which included 3-for-4 from the foul line.

We never gave up and we will growth from this game,” Burgess said.

As a team, we must rely on our defense to maintain when our shooting is not having success,” Burgess said.

Both teams are 2-1 overall, but the Hawks got away to a 1-0 start in conference play.

This game will only prepare us for the next game and so forth,” said Montezuma’s coach. “I am eager to watch this team grow and finish together.”
