SULLY – Again, the Braves and Lynnville-Sully played a close, very good baseball game.
And the Hawks won another tight one, 10-8, on Friday, June 27.
Lynnville-Sully led 4-0 through four innings. But the Braves scored 5 runs in the fifth inning, and three more in the sixth to take an 8-7 lead.
The Hawks kept their line moving, scoring three in their sixth, then holding on for a 10-8 win.
Montezuma outhit the Hawks 11-6, but Lynnville-Sully, 18-2 coming in , showed its versatility in some other areas.
Broox Stockman led Braves hitters by going 3-for-4, with two runs batted in and a stolen base.
Isaac Wedgewood had two hits and drove in a run.
Easton Hudnut went two-for-three.
Ty Smothers had one hit and drove in a pair of runs.
Rett Pargeon had one hit and drove in two.
Luke Erselius had a hit, as did Gavin Wilcox.
Montezuma made five errors.
Erselius started and pitched 5 innings. He gave up five hits and 7 runs, 3 of them earned. He walked three and struck out four.
Gavin Wilcox pitched one inning and allowed one hit. But, errors made behind him hurt his cause. He gave up three runs, none of them earned.
Wilcox walked and struck out two. He was nicked with a tough defeat.
The Hawks got two doubles from Carson Maston, who drove in two runs.
Gavin Olea drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifices.
The Hawks were guilty of 6 errors but partly made up for those by stealing four bases.
Starting pitcher Maston worked 5.2 innings, allowing 4 hits and 5 runs, 2 of them earned. He hit one batter, walked 3 and struck out 11.
Sophomore Trace Carlson worked 1.1 innings in relief, allowed 3 runs, none of them earned. He walked two and struck out 4.
The loss dropped Montezuma to 4-11.
