Hawks’ firepower subdues Braves

SULLY – Lynnville-Sully hit the previously unbeaten Braves will a well-rounded game and put the first baseball loss on Montezuma, 13-3, in six innings on Monday evening, June 7.

The Hawks (5-3 overall; 4-1 SICL), used a 12-hit attack and played sharp, one-error defense in dropping the Braves to 4-1 and 3-1.

Elsewhere, Sigourney won again and took over the top spot in league play with an unbeaten conference record.

Sophomore pitcher Conner Maston threw and batted at high levels for the Hawks.

Maston worked all six innings and scattered five Montezuma hits. He’s a power pitcher, and it showed with 13 strikeouts. He walked just one batter.

At the plate, Maston doubled, homered and drove in four runs.

The top of Montezuma’s order produced all of the Braves’ offense.

Cole Watts continued his hot hitting by going two-for-three, including a triple. He scored two runs and stole a base.

Watts’ night at the plate actually dropped his batting average 24 points – to .800 – which is still way out in front in all classes of Iowa prep play.

Connor Van Zee was two-for-three with a run batted in and Eddie Burgess was one-for-three with an RBI.

Owen Cook started and took the pitching loss for the Braves, working 3.2 innings. He allowed eight hits and nine runs, five of which were earned. He walked two and struck out two.

Cole Watts threw 1.2 innings of relief, allowing four hits and four runs, three of which were earned. He walked one and struck out one.

The Braves were still in this game at the midway point, trailing 5-2 heading into the home half of the fourth. But that’s when Lynnville-Sully plated four runs. The Hawks added two more in the fifth, and ended the game with two in the sixth.

Montezuma was guilty of six errors.

Freshman catcher Corder Noun Harder went three-for-four for Lynnville-Sully, with a pair of doubles, three runs batted in, and two stolen bases.

Owen Norrish was three-for-four, with a double.

Davis Utech hit a triple and drove in a run.
