VICTOR – HLV piled up a total of seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings and scored an 8-5 baseball victory over Montezuma on Wednesday, June 30.
The teams were locked in a 1-1 tie through three innings, then the Warriors scored four in the fourth and three in the fifth.
The Braves stayed within range with two in the fifth and two more in the sixth, but got no closer.
Montezuma led 7-5 in hits.
Cole Watts was two-for-four, with a double, and was two-for-two on stolen bases.
Connor Van Zee drove in two without benefit of a hit.
Cruz De Jong and Colton Benson each had a hit and a run batted in.
Owen Cook had a hit, as did Joey Kercheval.
Gavin Strong had a hit and a stolen base.
Cook pitched all six innings for the Braves. He allowed five hits and eight runs, only two of which were earned. The Braves made five errors.
Cook didn’t walk a batter and struck out six.
Ethan Kupka had two hits for HLV, including a double. He drove in a run, and stole two bases.
Max Henstorf had two hits and drove in a run.
Beau York pitched all seven innings for the win. He allowed five runs, three of them earned. He walked three, hit two and struck out seven.
Montezuma fell to 9-6 overall, which includes 8-6 in SICL play.
HLV was at 11-6 and 10-4.
