HUGE finish lifts girls past Lynnville-Sully

SULLY – The Montezuma Bravettes, held to 20 points through three quarters, put up 25 in the fourth to score a come-from-behind, 45-41 win over Lynnville-Sully on Friday evening, Dec. 3.

Wow, what a night at Lynnville-Sully for both (girls and boys) programs!” said Montezuma Coach Janel Burgess.

It definitely was not easy,” the coach said. “Lynnville-Sully was prepared defensively to make us earn our points.”

Lynnville-Sully scored moments into the fourth quarter to take a 28-20 lead, but Montezuma started back, one possession at a time, in a game dominated by the defenses for three quarters.

The Bravettes didn’t lock it up until freshman guard Ellen Cook made two free throws with 6.2 seconds left to give Montezuma its final four-point margin.

Zone and man-to-man defenses by the Hawks limited touches by Bravettes scoring leaders Mia Boulton and Shanae Wetering during the first half.

But those two were active in the second half, when Boulton scored 10 points and Wetering had six. Cook scored nine in the second half.

Montezuma got some valuable post play from Kallie Robison, who scored two baskets in each half.

Lynnville-Sully led 17-13 at halftime and 26-20 through three quarters.

Our girls had to fight through fatigue from a VERY busy week with state dance competition and three basketball games, early on in the season,” Burgess said.

I am so proud of our fight and composure to find a way to take the lead at the end.”

I know we had a lot of open shots that we didn’t hit and foul trouble was a huge issue for us,” Burgess said. “We had to battle through each challenge and make tough shots at crunch time.”

Montezuma went to 4-0 on the season, including a 2-0 record in SICL play. The Hawks are 2-2 and 1-1.

We are still defining our roles as well,” Burgess said. “We know our indentity is filled with grit and togetherness, which I love!

UP NEXT – Montezuma is at Colfax-Mingo on Tuesday.
