Day 1: Hurdles and other records fly at state

DES MOINES – Records fell all over the Blue Oval as favorable track and field weather swept over Drake Stadium on Thursday in the first day of the State Meet.

Montezuma was able to get one event – the boys’ 110-meter high hurdle shuttle – into Saturday’s finals.

Luke Brennan, Broox Stockman, Damien Knox and Garrett Watts broke their own school record with a time of 1:03.19. It was the fifth-fastest qualifying time for the finals, which go off starting at 12:15 on Saturday.

Montezuma’s effort lowered its previous school record time of 1:03.57, set last week in a meet at Pleasantville.

In other action, Chloe Snook set new personal records in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, as did Kenny Criswell in the boys 100.

Criswell clocked 11.26 in the 100, but needed 11.06 to get to the finals. As it is, he finished 14th in Class 1A.

Snook ran 26.62 in the 200, the 15th-fastest time.

She clocked 13.05 in the 100, which was 19th best.

Damien Knox in the long jump went 19-1.25, which left him 21st in the field of 24.

Snook went 14-9 in the girls long jump, the 22nd best leap.

On Friday, Garrett Watts high jumps at 2 p.m. Watts is the number five qualifier in that event.

Watts and Knox compete in the individual 110-meter highs at 4:20.

At 6:40 p.m., Montezuma’s boys 4×100 team of David Rose, Broox Stockman, Alex Black and Criswell compete in their prelim.

Records, state and individual, were set by athletes through an intense day of competition.
