TRAER – When dawn broke on Wednesday, May 11, all of a sudden it was summer.
It was hot. It was humid. By 10 a.m., birds were reportedly using potholders to pick up their worms on the golf course.
Golf? Wasn’t it too hot to play golf?
Not for the Montezuma Braves, who shot an amazing team score of 309 to win their Class 1A sectional meet by 25 strokes! The ball is said to soar in heat and humidity and the Braves were in control of their long game.
It was a repeat sectional crown for the Braves, who also won last year.
Cruz De Jong was meet medalist with an 18-hole score of 75.
The Braves had five of the six low scorers in this tournament!
Eddie Burgess was third at 76, Owen Cook was fourth with 78, Carsten James was fifth at 80 and Maguire De Jong was sixth at 83.
Jack Erselius shot 89, to place 17th out of 20 players.
Behind Montezuma’s winning 309 came: 2, BCLUW 334, 3, North Tama 351, 4, GMG 368, 5, BGM 386 and 6, Belle Plaine 409.
Montezuma now advances on to District play at Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls on Tuesday, May 17.
