MONTEZUMA – The Montezuma Bravettes 7th grade girls basketball team had its first game since December 16 when it hosted the North Mahaska Warhawks on Monday, January 13.
North Mahaska started quickly with an 8-2 lead. Alyssa Latcham found Lexi Urfer for a 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter to cut the lead to 8-5.
The Warhawks would extend their lead to 16-12 at the half.
But the Bravettes would slam the doors on the Warhawks at halftime. Monte’s defense would allow a stunning zero points in the second half. Monte had a big third quarter scoring 10 points. No one scored in the fourth quarter. The final was 22-16.
Monte shot 10-44 (23%) from the field, 2-7 from the 3-point line and 0-2 from the free throw line. North Mahaska shot 7-38 (18%) from the field, 0-3 from the 3-point line and 2-2 from the free throw line. Montezuma outrebounded NM 35-29. Monte had 19 turnovers while North Mahaska had 20.
Lexi Urfer led the scoring with 10 points including two 3-pointers. She also had 4 steals. Lucy Semprini had a nice game with 8 points and 5 rebounds.
Alyssa Latcham was a stat-stuffer. She had 4 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Aubree DeJoode had 6 rebounds. Alyssa Bos had 2 blocks.
The Montezuma Bravettes 7th graders move to 4-4 on the season. Their next game will be January 16 at Baxter.
