“This was a competitive game between two good junior high teams,” said Montezuma junior high boys coach Dennis Phelps.
And the Braves won it over English Valleys, 44-28, on Monday, Jan. 24.
“We got off to a good start in the first quarter and held our own through the half,” Phelps said, noting Montezuma’s 29-15 lead at intermission.
“We would get a couple quick baskets during the second half, but Keota always responded,” Phelps said.
“At times we moved the ball well, but just seemed to be a step late in hitting open teammates,” the coach said.
Still, Montezuma outscored English Valleys 17-11 in the second half to close out the win.
Phelps noted more turnovers than usual for the Braves. “But, our defense was solid and our rebounding was strong,” said the coach.
Brady Boulton scored 27 points for the Braves, including a trio of treys.
Broox Stockman scored 15. Luke Erselius had the other two.
“One of our major goals as we move into the last week of the season is to encourage some of our other players to become more involved on offense.”
“It was good for our boys to face better competition,” Phelps said. “We responded with proper techniques as the game wore on.”
