A dozen Montezuma Junior High School athletes competed in state track and field meets on Saturday, May 15, in two locations, and one Montezuma relay team emerged with a state championship.
Gilbert was the site of the girls meet, involving Chloe Snook, Haileah Eichenberger, Macy Young, Kayl Young and Ellen Cook.
Grinnell hosted the boys meet. Braves who competed for Coach Stacy Hopwood were Peyton Minner, Max Anderson, Brett Plants, David Rose, Carter Michalek, Broox Stockman and Brady Boulton.
At Gilbert, Montezuma’s 4×400 team of Macy Young, Kayl Young, Ellen Cook and Chloe Snook won in 4:38.66. The meet included a delay for lightning. It was windy, too, but Montezuma Coach Kevin Gartman said the Bravettes’ time was not wind-aided.
The same four girls were fourth in the sprint medley, with a time of 2;10.31.
Snook, a seventh grader, was sixth in the long jump with a season’s best of 13 feet, 3 inches.
Snook also took fourth in the 400 at 1:07.78.
Montezuma’s distance medley quarter of Eichenberer, Macy Young, Kayl Young and Cook were fifth in 5:01.
At Grinnell, Montezuma’s 4×400 quartet placed third. Runners were Brady Boulton, Carter Michalek, David Rose and Broox Stockman.
That same four placed sixth in the 4×200.
Also, Boulton was fourth in the long jump, an event that included all school sizes in the state.
