Montezuma’s junior high ‘B’ boys basketball team put together a full game and came away with a 43-24 win over Baxter at home on Monday, Feb. 1.
“The boys played really well and it was the best game as a team I have seen them play,” said Coach John Beck.
Kiyren Jurgensen scored 17 points and Broox Simpson had 14 as the Braves had quarter leads of 14-8, 25-12 and 33-17.
“On offense, we are starting to attack more and get better looks at the basket,” Beck sad. “We hit some big shots outside, too.”
“Kiyren Jurgensen was big,” Beck said. “His shot selection and confidence is really great right now. Broox Stockman did a real nice job running the point and attacking downhill. He is the kind of kid that is just going to find a way to get the job done.”
Briar Simpson had eight rebounds, two blocks and four deflections. Spencer Ross grabbed five rebounds.
“On defense, we forced a lot of bad shots and rebounded well,” Beck said. “I thought that our two Lukes (Brennan annd Erselius) pressured the ball really well. Briar Simpson and Spencer Ross did a great job on the boards,” the coach said.
“Overall, this is a tough and gritty group of young men,” Beck said. “They did not like the results of a couple of the games earlier in the year, so they came to work every day at practice and got better.”
