What a comeback!
The Montezuma junior high boys A-team came from 16 points down to score a 48-47 win over Lynnville-Sully on Monday, Dec. 13, at home.
“We did not lead until the final minute,” said Coach Dennis Phelps.
“Lynnville-Sully had a good inside game that was tough to defend, and a couple of nice shooters on the outside. We got down early and had to battle back the entire game.”
The Braves trailed 23-18 at halftime. It got worse – 38-22 at one point.
“Our full-court press was successful in creating turnovers for some easy baskets, strong inside rebounding for put-backs – and 33 attempts from the free throw line,” the coach said.
“Strong rebounding from Broox Stockman and Luke Erselius built momentum, then a big three-pointer by Brady Boulton gave us our first lead with less than a minute left to play,” Phelps said.
Boulton scored 23 points for 3-0 Montezuma and Stockman had 13. Erselius scored 7. Other scoring included Dane Strong with 3 and Luke Brennan with 2.
“I am very proud of our effort despite not shooting well from the field and only 12-33 from the free throw line,” Phelps said.
“This will be our last game until after Christmas,” the coach said. “A majority of our opponents do not start their seasons until after the break.”
