The Montezuma Bravettes junior high girls A team scored a 29-22 win over Sigourney on Monday, Nov. 11.
Sigourney had a nice team and this turned into a very hard-fought game.
The Savages jumped to an 8-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Montezuma was plagued with several turnovers and missed shots early in the game.
The Bravettes settled in much better in the second quarter to take the lead 15-10 at the half.
Sigourney made runs in the third quarter but Monte always had an answer. Sydnee Burgess made a basket as the buzzer sounded to give the Bravettes a 23-18 to end the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was a defensive battle. The Bravettes’ defense remained strong throughout the game. Monte held on to win 29-22.
The Bravettes struggled in shooting, going 13-47 for 28% from the field, 0-5 on 3 pointers and 3-14 from the line.
The Savages were 10-47 for 21% from the field, 0-1 on 3-pointers and 2-7 from the line. Both teams had 43 rebounds. The Bravettes had 16 steals, 7 blocks and 15 turnovers. The Savages had 7 steals, 8 blocks and 22 turnovers.
Syd Burgess led the way with 10 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals and 5 blocks. Leah Urfer also played well inside. Urf had 8 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocks. Vivian Cook had 7 points. Rylee Wolford had 4 points and 5 steals.
The Bravettes are 1-0. They host Colfax-Mingo on Monday, November 28 at 415.
