Junior high girls run to SICL title!

NEW SHARON – It doesn’t get much closer – or much better – than Montezuma’s razor-thin margin over North Mahaska for the team championship at the girls junior high SICL meet on Tuesday evening, May 11.

Going into the 4×400, it was just a 2.17-point lead (for us) and it doesn’t get much closer than that, especially for an SICL title,” said Montezuma Coach Kevin Gartman.

With the meet on the line in that final event, the Bravettes finished first in 4:46.97, with the Warhawks were in second at 4:50.15.

Final team score: Bravettes 113, North Mahaska 108.83.

It was a battle all night with North Mahaska,” Gartman said.

Montezuma won three relays and three individual events.

The 4×400 runners were Amy Longfellow, Catelynn Coffin, Macy Young and Chloe Snook.

Montezuma won the sprint medley, with Taya Sincox, Lily Ferry, Haileah Eichenberger and Kayl Young carrying the baton.

(Please note: Relay order is what was reported to meet officials. If the Bravettes made some switches, we don’t know about them yet).

The Bravettes won the 1,600 distance medley, with Eichenberger, Longfellow, Kayl Young and Ellen Cook as the runners.

Montezuma was second in the 4×800 and 4×200 relays.

Chloe Snook won the 200-meter dash in 28.98 seconds, and the 400 in 1:05.24.

Ellen Cook won the 800 in 2:45.79, and placed second in the 1,500-meter run.

When you end your season with the strongest performances of the year, it means the kids have been working hard in practice and have put in the level of effort needed,” Gartman said. “I can say without a doubt that this is true.”

Gartman added, “I’m going to miss the heck out of this group of kids, but I am excited to coach the seventh grade group again next season, while watching our eighth graders compete at the high school level.”

Major props to all the girls for their work tonight,” Gartman said. “It wasn’t about one kid and it never has been. I’m proud of them all.”
