Montezuma’s junior high girls basketball teams got their seasons off to a great start by sweeping Sigourney on Monday, Nov. 22.
The A team was a 50-13 winner. The B team also won, by a 35-4 score.
‘A’ team’s victory . . .
The Bravettes jumped to a 18-2 lead after one quarter using a swarming defense and a fast break offense to baffle the young Savages.
Monte continued to play very hard and unselfishly to jump to a 34-6 halftime lead.
With 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, the Bravettes took a 35- point lead which leads to a running clock. The final ended 50-13.
The Bravettes made 22 of 60 from the field for 37% including 1-5 from 3-point range. The Savages were 6-30 for 20% including 1-4 from distance.
Monte was 5-9 from the free throw line. Sigourney was 0-6. Bravettes won the battle of the boards 35-32. Monte had 12 turnovers while forcing 35.
Claire Erselius led the way with 20 points on 10-15 shooting. She also had 6 steals. Sydnee Burgess showed versatility with her left hand to get 9 points and led with 7 rebounds.
Haileah Eichenberger had 5 points including a 3-pointer and a block. Lindsey Henry had 4 points and 2 blocks. Chloe Snook had 4 points.
Vivian Cook had 2 points and 8 steals. Lily Ferry had 2 points
and a block. Makenna Warden scored 2 points. Krista Cheney swished 2 free throws. Kami Mathes had 5 steals.
The Bravettes are 1-0 and play at Colfax on Monday, November 29.
‘B’ team rolls to victory
The Bravettes ‘B-‘team played two quarters vs Sigourney. The Bravettes won 35-4. Latisia Wilson led the scoring with 10 strong points. Rylee Wolford hustled all over to score 8.
Tegan Barnhart showed nice athletic ability to get 6 points. Kieran Perez got 4 points. Krista Cheney had 3 points. AJ Kercheval and Daisy McNaul each had a basket.
