MARENGO – Montezuma’s junior high boys ‘A’ and ‘B’ basketball teams merged forces to defeat Iowa Valley 50-35 in the final junior high action of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
“The boys did a really good job and ended the season in a great way,” said Coach John Beck.
The Braves led 11-5 after one quarter, 23-9 at the half and 35-27 through three periods.
“Because of low numbers for Iowa Valley, we played just one game,” Beck said. “I wanted everyone to play in the last game, so we went over there with 17 boys and all 17 played,” Beck said. “So it was truly a whole team effort win.”
“We led from start to finish and survived their run (18-12) in the third quarter,” said the coach.
Garrett Watts led with 20 points. Max Anderson scored 11, including a trio of three-balls.
Jack Erselius splashed down a pair of treys for six points.
Tod Geiger scored six, and Houston Van Roekel, Carter Michalek and Spencer Ross each scored two points.
“We did a great job with our help-side defense, which led to three single-digit quarters for them,” Beck said.
“Offensively, we did a really good job, with four double-digit quarters. We moved the ball well,” Beck said.
The win brought the ‘A’ team’s record to 5-6 for the season.
