It was a big come-from-behind win, 39-33, for the Montezuma junior varsity boys in their home basketball game against HLV on Monday, Dec. 10.
The Braves fell behind 19-2 after one quarter, but started back immediately, and finally caught up and went past their opponent in the fourth.
“After the second quarter started, we had more energy and began to play much better,” said Braves Coach Cal Smith.
Gavin Strong paced the Braves with 22 points, which included a trio of three-pointers. He also had five rebounds, five steals, and five deflections.
“We were getting a lot of stops on defense,” Smith said. “On offense, we moved the ball well and were able to get off great shots.”
Cameron Johnson scored six points and Connor Van Zee had four for Montezuma.
Colton Benson snagged 12 rebounds.
“The number one thing we need to work on is not to complain about the refs,” Smith said. “Calls aren’t always going to go our way, but complaining about them will not make things better. We have to play on and control what we can control.”
“But,” said Smith, “I’m proud that our boys were able to compete until the end and pull out a win.”
