The formula used recently by Montezuma’s junior varsity boys basketball team is working: Fall behind early, rally, then win late.
They did it again Thursday evening, Dec. 19, scoring a 40-39 win over Sigourney after falling behind 13-7 after one quarter.
“Another great win!” said Coach Cal Smith. “It’s funny, because one of the players made a comment, saying all of our games are come-from-behind wins.”
The Braves turned the tables on the Savages in the second quarter, outscoring them 13-6 to lead 20-19 at halftime. Sigourney was back up 29-28 after three.
“Sigourney did a great job on defense of preventing us from getting into the lane,” Smith said. “But we were able to get some turnovers and score some transition points.”
Cameron Johnson led Montezuma with 16 points. He added four rebounds and four assists.
Gavin Strong had 12 points, four steals and three deflections.
Connor Van Zee scored five points and grabbed three rebounds.
Jack Brenner scored four points, Colton Benson had seven rebounds and Camden Michalek had four rebounds.
Jacob Hutchcraft had five rebounds and two assists.
“The guys, once again, competed until the end and were able to pull off another . . .come-from-behind-win!” Smith said.
“The number one thing we need to work on is moving our feet and not reaching for the ball.”
