SULLY – Montezuma fell way behind early, played better in the second half, but still fell 63-24 to Lynnville-Sully in JV boys basketball on Monday, Dec. 14.
The Braves trailed 21-6 after one quarter and 44-9 at halftime.
“We did not come out well at all,” said Coach Cal Smith. “We were not excited to play and there was no energy on defense.”
The Braves were outscored just 19-15 during second half action.
“I am proud that we were able to compete in the second half,” Smith said. “We have another opportunity to play this Friday against Sigourney to show what we are capable of.”
Camden Michalek scored 11 points on four-for-eight shooting to lead the Braves. Garrett Watts hit four-of-five from the field and scored eight.
Maguire DeJong pulled down six rebounds to lead the Braves in that category.
Montezuma shot 31 percent from the field, to 55 percent by the Hawks.
“The players have to want to be there and have to want to play,” Smith said. “There were a couple of athletes that competed the whole game and looked like they wanted to be there. But overall, the players need to decide whether they want to play basketball.”
