Montezuma’s junior varsity boys basketball team made it two wins in a row as it raced by Iowa Valley 63-26 Monday evening, Dec. 9.
The Braves led 12-0 after one quarter, 31-7 at halftime, and 56-11 through three after going on a 25-4 tear during the quarter. “We had a great game,” said Montezuma Coach Cal Smith.
Gavin Strong led Montezuma scoring with 21 points. Camden Michalek scored 14 and Sawyer Tindle had 11, including a trio of three-point baskets.
Jack Brenner led Montezuma rebounders with nine.
“The offense did another good job attacking the basket, and we did a better job boxing out,” Smith said.
“It was great to see everyone have an opportunity to play as well.”
The Braves shot 43 percent from the field and limited the Tigers to 24 percent. Montezuma also allowed Iowa Valley 17 fewer field goal attempts.
“The thing we need to work on,” Smith said, “is learning to play on through tough calls. We are not always going to get the calls we want, so we need to keep playing the game even when things don’t go our way.”
