THORNBURG – The Montezuma junior varsity boys basketball team scored a 48-24 road win over Tri-County Tuesday evening, Jan. 7.
“The guys had a great game all around,” said Braves Coach Cal Smith. “They attacked the basket and were able to get some layups and defensively they did a good job moving their feet and getting some stops.”
Montezuma led 12-3 after one quarter, 25-9 at the half and 46-15 after a 21-point third quarter.
Lots of Braves saw action. “It was a great opportunity to have some of the other players who don’t play as much to get some time,” Smith said. “Like the starters, they ran the offense well, took care of the basketball and drove to the hoop to set up shots. They also played really well on defense and were able to force turnovers.”
Cameron Johnson scored 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field. He also had 10 rebounds and 5 steals.
Gavin Strong scored 11 points and had four rebounds.
Camden Michalek was next in scoring with nine points.
Jacob Hutchcraft scored five points, had five steals, and four rebounds.
Jack Brenner scored five points and pulled down five rebounds.
“The team has improved a lot since the beginning of the season,” Smith said.
