JV boys win in overtime

Coming from behind to win is getting to be a familiar theme for the Montezuma junior varsity boys basketball team.

This time, they did it in overtime!

The Braves were 56-54 winners at home over Keota on Monday evening, Jan. 6. “The guys played really well,” said Coach Caleb Smith. “I was a little concerned that they would be sluggish after a long break, but they competed another full game and pulled off a win.”

Montezuma trailed 9-4 after one quarter, 19-17 at halftime and 35-32 through three periods.

But then came a 17-14 fourth for the Braves to send it into overtime – where they prevailed.

Cameron Johnson poured in 25 points for Montezuma and Gavin Strong scored 19.

Johnson was 8-for-15 from the field, including 3-for-3 on treys. He also had five rebounds and four assists. “One thing our players need to work on is finding someone to box out and getting the rebound,” Smith said.

Strong was 8-for-16 from the field dished four assists and had three steals. “The players have a lot of potential and I don’t think they realize how good they can be,” Smith said.

“They compete against one of the best teams in Iowa in practice all the time, and I believe they are fully capable of stopping any team they go against,” the coach said.

UP NEXT – The Braves will be in action again tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Tri-County.
