It was bombs away for the Braves as they outscored BCLUW, 46-29 in the Montezuma jamboree on Friday evening, Nov. 29.

Montezuma shot well overall, but had a field day from behind the three-point arc. The Braves were 11-for-18 (.611) from back there, and 16-for-29 (.552) overall for the half of play.

Jamboree scrimmages do not count as wins or losses, but they give teams a chance to compete in game-like conditions.

Montezuma led 19-16 after one quarter, but the pace of play got faster and the Braves went on a 27-13 tear in the second period.

Montezuma owned the boards by a 14-7 margin and were guilty of just four turnovers, compared with BCLUW’s 11. Those two factors helped the Braves get things speeded up.

Cole Watts led Montezuma with a 14-point half. He was five-for-six from the field, which included four-for-five on treys.

Eddie Burgess scored 12 points, which included four-for-five shooting, including a trio of treys. He also led Montezuma rebounders with six and had a pair of steals.

Trey Shearer scored nine points for the Braves and led in assists with three.

Masin Shearer hit a pair of three-pointers for Montezuma and scored eight points. He added two steals.

BCLUW was 5-15 last season, including an 82-56 regular season loss to the Braves.

UP NEXT – Montezuma opens its season on Tuesday, Dec. 2, hosting North Mahaska in the first SICL game of the season. It also will be the first girls-boys varsity doubleheader of the year.
