‘Let Freedom Ring’ is Saturday, Sept. 5

Montezuma’s “Let Freedom Ring” celebration got moved from one holiday to another – but it’s still on – for Saturday, Sept. 5, on the Labor Day weekend.

COVID-19 concerns caused the change in dates from the July 4th weekend and some changes in events.

Still, Montezuma’s “biggest block party of the year” offers plenty. Various organizations participate, with the Montezuma Community Boosters doing much of the organizing.

Everyone is encouraged to practice social distancing and take other precautions along the parade route and around the square.

Highlight event is the parade, which will start at 10 a.m.

Parade entries are to line up at Montezuma Community Schools starting at 8:30 a.m.

To submit your parade entry, you are asked to email Abby@MontezumaIowa.Org, or call (641) 623-5617.

This is Montezuma’s homecoming week, and the big football game will be on Friday, Sept. 4. Kickoff at Badger-Gabriel Field will be at 7 p.m. against Winfield-Mt. Union.

On Saturday, sidewalk sales and open houses will begin at 8:00 a.m.

The ‘Let Freedom Ring’ parade will start at 10 a.m. (File).

There will be food stands and local restaurants will have items. Funnel cakes will be available. Ice cream will be sold by the After-Prom Committee.

After the parade, there will be a mini-expo on the southeast corner of the square. It’s free for the vendors, who do need to submit their exhibitor information. Email to Events@MontezumaCommunityBoosters.com, or call Loren at (319) 244-8737.

Free pony rides will be offered on the east side of the square.

An inflatable bounce house will be in operation on the west side of the square.

And there will be a horse shoe pitching contest just south of the square.

Organizers say more activities are in the works and ask that you watch for more information.
