A nearly ideal late summer evening at the modernized No. 1 shelter house at Diamond Lake Park was the setting for the Montezuma Lions Club’s 75th anniversary celebration picnic. The social event was a culmination of the club’s year of celebrating the 75th year since its formation in 1947.

In all, 52 persons signed in. This included several former members who accepted the open invitation and encouragement to come. Spouses of deceased members were specially invited guests.

FOOD MASTER MIKE PRINCER, at left, was the chairman of the planning and serving of the Lions club’s 75th anniversary picnic. Pictured helping serve the hamburgers and hot dogs are Bill Schultz, in center, and Gordon Alexander. Other Lions also assisted.

Special guests in past and present leadership positions in Iowa Lionism were present to congratulate the club. They included: District Governor David Coates and Vice District Governor Jimmy Bacon, both of Des Moines; Past International Director and Past State Administrator Gary Fry and his wife, Joann, of Mitchellville; and Steve and Mary Halstead of Bondurant. Steve Halstead is the coordinator for Lions who are cornea tissue volunteer transporters since the program’s beginning in 2009.  Each of these leader guests spoke briefly.
