The entertainment, the meal, and the presentation of awards highlighted the Montezuma Lions Club’s Christmas dinner and program held Monday, Dec. 13.

In keeping with tradition, the pork chop-featured dinner was held at the United Methodist Church, with the church choir preparing and serving the meal. The pork chops were grilled by Lions club member Mike Princer.

Widows of deceased Lions were invited guests. Other guests included Montezuma Mayor Jacki Bolen and her husband, Bill, and Methodist Pastor Brian Cushman and his wife, Robin, and daughter, Gabby, as well as spouses and other companion guests of members.

Past District Governor Boyd Sparks served as master of ceremonies.

ENJOYABLE ENTERTAINMENT at the Lions club’s Dec. 13 Christmas program was provided by Montezuma’s multi-talented Ventriloquist Ted Morelock and his friend, Buford. Here Ted and Buford are humorously discussing Christmas gifts for one another. (Roger Allen photos).

Two Lions awards were presented.

Rick Talbert received the Melvin Jones Fellow honor, named for the founder of Lionism. It is awarded through Lions Clubs International Foundation, its highest honor. Talbert has been an active member for 18 years, including serving as club president two years.

William Gregory was presented the Warren Coleman Honorary Award. It is the Iowa Lions Foundation’s highest honor, named in recognition of Coleman’s exceptional volunteer service.

Similarly, Gregory, who has been a member just three years, was recognized for his exceptional volunteer service to the Montezuma club and community. One example of his volunteer service is the lead role he has taken in the mowing of Wayside Park. His parents, Allen and Neva Gregory, were present to see William receive the recognition.

Lions club member, Jackson Church of Christ pastor, and ventriloquist Ted Morelock and his human-like friend, Buford, provided the entertainment highlight. With lots of humor “they” had a meaningful discussion about gift-receiving versus gift-giving, leading up to why we celebrate Christmas and what was and is the best gift of all.
