Sierra Chavez, a senior at Freedom High School in Orlando, Florida, won the 184 lb. wt. class in the Florida Girls High School Wrestling tournament, while going undefeated the entire season.
She is the granddaughter of Darrell Ferneau, MHS ’69, who was a fine athlete himself as a Monte Brave in the late ‘60s.
Ferneau, who now calls Arizona home, said his 18-year-old granddaughter is a 2nd degree black belt. But she has only been wrestling for two years, after having to come back from an ACL injury she suffered earlier.
Sierra is ranked 17th in the nation according to USA Wrestling and is a three-time All-American.
Although her future plans aren’t definite, she would like to wrestle in college.
Congratulations to Grandfather Darrell Ferneau and Sierra.
