LOOKING BACK FIFTY YEARS

Where were you the week of April 9, 1970?

  • After 45 years at Montezuma Schools, Athletic Director I. A. (Gabe) Gabriel announces his retirement. A widely-known football coach, he was one of the first Iowa high school coaches to use the “T” formation.
  • Stephen Cranston of Deep River has been named to the honor roll at William Penn College.
  • Census takers, Mary Jo Watson & Mrs. Frank Rowell, started the house-to-house canvass on April 1st (no fooling) to pick up questionnaires distributed earlier by the Post Office.
  • Stephen McKeag was received into communicant membership at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Deep River.
  • Marlin McKeag announces his candidacy on the Democratic ticket for the Poweshiek county office of Treasurer.
  • After 25 years in the hog buying industry, Mayor Slim Hedrick leases his business to the Armour Company. Marvin Johnson is the newly appointed hog buyer in the area.
  • Easter Bunny Roger Cox left cookies at the doorstep of teacher/coach Mr. Tipton’s residence.
  • Max Breniman bowls high games of 232 and 200 on his way to a 611 series at Star Lanes.
  • Montezuma City Council hires additional police protection to deter traffic violators, vandalism and other unlawful acts which have been on the increase.
  • Mayor Hedrick appoints committee to design a monument for the square including a drinking fountain and a clock. Funds for the construction will come from the $10,000 left to the city by the late Martha Klindt.
  • Marilee Gruneich was initiated into the Alpha Phi Sigma, a national honor fraternity at NE Missouri State.
  • Lettermen Kevin Miller and Dan Steffy will form the nucleus of the Braves golf team for 1970.
  • Former MHS football coach, Duane Marcellus, has resigned at Twin Rivers of Bode to accept an offer from Pocahontas. Marcellus compiled a 12-4-1 record in three years as the Braves head mentor.
  • UNI HONORS VILLERS: Roger Villers, former MHS distance-running star, will be initiated into the varsity lettermen’s Club at the University of Northern Iowa. Villers lettered in Cross-Country in the fall and is now competing on the Panthers track squad.
