August 31st will be the first day of school in Montezuma for the 1970-71 school year. School will start at 8:30 a.m, and dismiss at 2:30 the first week. A five-meal lunch ticket will be $1.75. Activity tickets are $6.75.
Deep River and Millersburg schools will both begin on August 26. The DR-M school band will play at the State Fair on Friday, August 21.
City Council and Jaycees propose a 4-way stop at the intersection of Highway 63 and Main Street.
David Van Arkel was the first place winner in the annual swine carcass class held at the Poweshiek County 4-H and FFA Fair, receiving the top prize of $10.
Viet Nam Army veteran and UNI grad, Wiley Hansen, age 26, has been named to teach English at the Montezuma Junior High School, replacing the retiring Mrs. Merle Dieleman.
An 11 p.m. curfew is passed by the Brooklyn City Council for children under 18 years age. (Hmm…now who do you suppose might have been raising hell over there 50 years ago?)
The state champion Montezuma Bravettes and their coaches will be entertained by at the Country Club by the Lions Club, with Wayne Cooley of the IHSGAU as the guest speaker.
School board secretary announces that two directors and the treasurer’s position will be on the September 14 ballot. Gordon Braley, Dale McWilliams and M. L. Arendt are expected to run for re-election.
No state funding of the extra milk program this year at school. Students may purchase a 20-day milk ticket for $1.25. Supt. James Carroll says that no student will be deprived of extra milk due to the cost.
New arrival at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Neels, of Pella, is Anthony Dale Neels. He has a brother Billy, 6, and a sister, Sheri, 4.
Deborah Sue McClure graduated from St. Luke’s school of Nursing in Cedar Rapids on August 14.
