The country club roof was torn off by a tremendous windstorm. Light plant employe, Calvin Miller, said “it was the most damage caused by wind in my 30 years experience”.

Monday Night Football airs for the first time on September 21, with a game between the New York Jets and the Browns in Cleveland. Advertisers paid $65,000 per minute.

Gordon Braley and Dale McWilliams were re-elected as directors of the Montezuma School Board. A total of 185 votes were cast, one of the largest voter turnouts in years.

CITY PARK: The storm damage done at the West City Park in 1970 is very similar to what happened here on August 10, 2020, with the derecho. These good-looking kids are Gayle Wengert and her brother Tom Wengert, who just moved to Montezuma in June that year.

Charles McKee of Montezuma is elected Grand Chancellor (president) of the Knights of Pythias, becoming the second Montezuman to attain that honor in recent years. Frank Wheeler was the civic organization’s president in 1965.

Gene Baethke and Marv Walker lead the Braves to a 20-8 win at Marengo. Baethke rushed 29 times for 175 yards with Walker toting the pigskin 21 times for 111 yards.

Monte fresh-soph football team “swims” to victory over English Valleys, 12-0, in a rain-shortened game. Kenny Smith scored both TDs on quarterback sneaks.

The Ivan Kleins are parents of a baby girl born September 3, named Diana Marie. She has a sister Penne, 5, and a brother Randy, 2.
