The fourth annual Community Fund Drive starts October 19th with a goal of raising $4,000. Co-chairpersons are Frank Brownell and Mrs. Dick Arendt.

Mr. & Mrs. Vian Ewart, natives of Scotland and Iceland, but currently living in Canada, are fascinated to be able to visit a city with the same name as theirs — Ewart, Iowa.

Mayor Hedrick reports that the 1970 Census (1,338) shows that Montezuma has lost 78 residents since the 1960 Census (1,416). An anonymous source suggested counting prisoners in the local jail even though they are Brooklyn residents.

TALENTED RUNNING BACK: Gene Baethke, #12, gained 175 yards on 29 carries as the Braves opened their season with a win at Marengo.  #37 is Lee Sharer.

At 6’0” and 250 lbs., Keith “Bear” Johnson, MHS ’70, has earned a starting berth at defensive tackle at Iowa Wesleyan College as the Tigers prepare to meet Culver-Stockton in their season opener.

Coach Darrell Brand’s Braves beat a tough English Valleys Bears squad behind the running of “Marvelous Marvin” Walker and the defensive play of Jim Casey, Steve Schuldt, Dave Kercheval and their big man on the line, Larry Iverson.

Sophomore gridder, Mike Van Cleave, MHS ’69, leads the William Penn Statesmen to victory over Lea College. Van Cleave, 6’3” & 204 lbs., was in on numerous tackles and intercepted a pass for Coach Ron Randelman’s squad.

Jumpin’ Jack” Morrissey leads the Braves XC team to a fifth place finish at the Pella Invitational run as Coach Dennis Brand’s harriers prepare for the state mile team race at Ames.

FUN CLASS: Miss Erickson’s homemaking class tries some outdoor cooking that should make a great mid-morning snack.  Shari Hall is on the left, Miss Erickson in the middle, and Cathy Sanders on the right.

Jaycees Paul Jones and Gayle Creswell head up the annual punt-pass (what no kick?) for the 4th, 5th and 6th graders.

Airman First Class Rex B. Pitman II has been assigned to Norton AFB in California. Rex is a MHS graduate from the class of ’63.

SIDELINE CELEBRATION: Steve Schuldt, #26, got quite the reception after intercepting a pass and returning it for a TD in the Braves win over Iowa Valley.
