LOOKING BACK – FIFTY YEARS

Where were you the week of May 7, 1970? 

Four Kent State University students were killed and nine were injured when members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire on a crowd gathered to protest the Vietnam War.

Rocked by student demonstrations against the Vietnam War and the killings at Kent State, the Grinnell College campus is closed and commencement exercises are canceled.

Ernie Mitchell announces his retirement as a Poweshiek County Deputy Sheriff. He served under four different sheriffs in his 10 years of service. John Griffin, MHS ’58, has been appointed to succeed him by Sheriff Max Allen.

Tony Gray, MHS ’54, recently assumed the duties of Recruiter in Charge, U.S. Navy Recruiting Branch Station, at Anaheim, CA. He is the brother of Don and Fred Gray.

Joel Grier, MHS ’67, and Jacki Rabenold, MHS ’68, are elected class officers at Northwest Missouri State College at Maryville.

Denny Hutchinson is elected president of the Montezuma Jaycees.

Earl Duffus is recovering at his home after he suffered a severe leg fracture at the Montezuma Country Club while working on the pool.

James Wehrle, MHS ’68, has been elected state treasurer of the Young Republicans of Oklahoma.

Kevin Kudart is hospitalized at the Ottumwa hospital with a broken leg.

Bill Buzard, MHS ’68, and Nancy Gorsuch, MHS ’69, are among 276 Central College students named to the second term Dean’s list.

Each mile of Iowa’s rural primary highways will soon have its own identification marker. A total of 15,990 six-inch wide by 16-inch high signs will be installed on new steel posts at intervals of one mile on both sides of the highway at a cost of $127, 973.

Kevin Miller paces the Braves golf team with a 39 as they defeat the neighboring Bears, 175-189.

William McLain, MHS ’69, is assigned to Lackland AFB for basic training.

Lynn Baustian and Phil Paulsen were inducted into the armed forces at Des Moines.
