Casey Pierce, Melvin Ranfeld and Ron Meredith earn a gold rating in welding as MHS hosts the annual district FFA contest with 12 chapters represented and over 200 students.

Making their fifth appearance in six years, the two-time state champion Bravettes will meet #11 rated Roland-Story (22-1) @ 2:30 pm in Veteran’s Auditorium in the opening round of the girls’ state tournament. The Bravettes average 96.5 ppg.

Dr. Frank Dierenfeld of Deep River, along with Dr. W. D. Buzard and Dr. L. W. Cook of Montezuma attend the 89th annual meeting of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association in Des Moines.

Montezuma Republican newspaper bowling team of Pat Watts, Joyce Byers, Jo Ann Fredrickson, Marilyn Johannes and June Williams, won the County Championship at the Bowladrome in Grinnell.

WINNERS OF 88 straight games and shooting for their third straight state championship are the 1970-71 Montezuma Bravettes.

Carl Nichols scores 31 points as the Braves (21-0) defeat Keota, 59-51, before 3,000 fans at Ottumwa in the district semi-final.  In the district final, Braves beat Moravia, 60-38, at the Parsons College Fieldhouse in Fairfield.

Montezuma Mutual Telephone advertises long-distance calls for as little as 70 cents for three minutes.

Two Montezuma men, David Simpson and Gary Carter, enlisted in the U. S. Army with basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO.

Montezuma farmer, Howard Johnston, was named one of Iowa’s 25 master pork producers at the recent 29th Annual convention held at Fort Des Moines Hotel.

Winners of the annual boys and girls free throw contest for the 4th, 5th and 6th grade were announced.  First place winners:  Ruth Fleming, Lana Harry and Susan Carroll; L. J. Fahlenkamp, Kevin Kudart and Larry Baethke.

Army Private Stephen Cranston of Deep River, recently completed eight weeks of basic training at the U. S. Army Training Center, in Ft. Lewis, Washington.

Two new baby girls born recently with Montezuma connections are Jennifer Criswell and Amy Beth Ferguson.
