Nearly 3,600 fans pack the gym at Ottumwa to see the Braves beat Mid-Prairie in the sub-state game to advance to state.

Tony Gray, a Montezuma native, and now a Navy recruiter based in California, is commended by the L.A. Police Department for aiding an elderly man who had been injured when his bicycle was struck by a motorcycle.

Tribal Warfare:  The Montezuma Braves face the Camanche Indians in the opening round of the boys’ state basketball tournament at Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines.

Cathie Sutherland, MHS ’67, and her Pi Phi sorority sisters from Iowa Wesleyan College, spent the weekend at the Dave Sutherland home at Lake Ponderosa.

Well-known high school coach, Jerry Criswell, dies of a heart attack.  A ’58 graduate of Malcom High School, he is survived by his wife and three sons, Greg, Jeff, and Tim.

The engagement of Joy Bryan to Dean Hubbard is announced with plans for a summer wedding.

Chris Wells, MHS ’67, is a senior at Grinnell College.

Kathy Kammin of Roland-Story scores 28 points but it is not enough as the Bravettes win the state tourney opener, 77-65.  (Kathy’s brother, Chad Kammin, would later become a teacher at MHS)

Life Magazine has a camera mounted to the fan-shaped backboard to photograph Sandy Van Cleave as she hits two free-throws with no time on the clock to send the game into overtime vs. Mediapolis.

Mediapolis forward, 6’1” Barb Wischmeier, scores 71 points, ending the Bravettes consecutive victory streak at 89.

More than 1,000 fans filled in gym to welcome the Bravettes back home on Sunday.  Speakers included Coaches Rugland and Willrich, Supt. Jim Carroll, KGRN’s Frosty Mitchell.  John Morrissey was the master-of-ceremonies.
