In school board news: A new girls’ track program was approved by the board. Everett “Junior” Freeborn resigns as bus driver to accept a job with the county and a discussion topic is building tennis courts on the school grounds.

Mayor Hedrick questions the accuracy of the 1970 Census that says Montezuma has declined in population from 1,416 in 1960 to 1,338 now – a loss of 78 people.

Eight are men were initiated into the Shrine at Davenport, including Don Erquist, Lyle Anderson and Dode Baustian from Monte. Deep River men initiated were: Red Icenbice, Duane Phelps, Lowell McClure, Ed Allison, and Farrell Johnson.

Former Boy Scout, Darrell Ferneau, pens a congratulatory note to Bob Sanders who has been named “Scoutmaster of the Year”.

Paul Jones, MHS science teacher, is one of 35 teachers chosen from seven states to attend a regional seminar of the National Association of Biology Teachers at the University of Minnesota.

C. V. Dunham, Laverne Schlesselman, and Rink Johnson of Deep River represented Post 296 in the Armed Forces Parade in Des Moines.

Judy Phillips becomes a Delta Epsilon Officer at William Penn College at an installation dinner held at Red Lyon Inn in Ottumwa.

Fifty teachers and school administrators representing all the SICL schools gather for the annual conference golf tournament held at the Montezuma Country Club.

The DR-M Marching Band, directed by Karen J. Bartacheck, was awarded 1st place at the 24th annual Eastern Iowa Band Festival held in Cedar Rapids. Roseann Agnew of DR-M, was crowned “Miss Eastern Iowa of 1970” as part of band festivities held at Memorial Stadium.

George Buzard graduates from Wentworth Military Academy at Lexington, Missouri.

The Rev. Walter Williams will be the featured speaker at the annual Class Sermon held on Sunday for 57 graduating seniors at MHS. Commencement will be Friday, May 29 at 8:00 pm.
