KALONA – Montezuma’s post-season softball game against Hillcrest Academy was another close battle.
The game was tied at 5-5 through four innings, then each side put up two runs in the sixth.
The Bravettes scored twice in the seventh to lead 10-8.
But Hillcrest put up three in the bottom half of the inning to walk off with an 11-10 victory.
The game was played on Monday, July 7.
The Bravettes had 10 hits. Vivian Cook was two-for-three, and Ellen Cook had two runs batted in and drew a walk.
Lily Ferry went two-for-three.
Kamryn Schmidt had one hit and a run batted in.
Syd Burgess had one hit – a double.
Lauryn Larmore and Leah Urfer each had one hit.
The Bravettes were nine-for-nine on stolen bases. Vivian Cook had three steals, Ferry had 2, Brielle Hauhey had two, Mya Smothers had one and Larmore had one.
But Montezuma also was guilty of six errors in the contest.
Leah Urfer pitched 6.1 innings, allowed 9 hits and gave up 11 runs, just four earned. She didn’t walk anyone and struck out six.
Malia Yoder, the Ravens’ pitcher, also was the big hitter, going three-for-five with three runs batted in.
Claire Withrow had two hits, two runs batted in, and two stolen bases.
Ella Mize drive in two runs with a hit and Stavia Miller had two hits and one RBI.
Annika Schrock had two hits.
Hillcrest Academy made seven errors.
Yoder pitched 6.0 innings, yielded 8 hits and 9 runs, 7 of which were earned. She allowed four walks, hit one batter and struck out 5.
Ella Mize pitched 1.0 innings and wound up the winner. She allowed one unearned run, struck out one and didn’t walk anyone.
Hillcrest Academy moved on in the Class 1A tourney with a 13-14 record.
Montezuma closed the books on a 5-14 season.
