Maquoketa Valley comes back to win

CEDAR RAPIDS – Closer, closer, but still, not quite a win for the Montezuma Bravettes Saturday, Nov. 30, in Cedar Rapids.

Montezuma was taking on another larger school, Class 2A Maquoketa Valley, at “Rivalry Saturday,” a series of games played at Kirkwood Community College.

The Bravettes had a 31-24 lead through three quarters, only to see Maquoketa Valley pull out the win with a 14-4 fourth quarter rally.

It was a defensive-minded game, with only a 15-14 Montezuma first quarter what you would call “normal.”

The Bravettes were held to two points in the second quarter, and four in the fourth.

Montezuma outscored Maquoketa Valley 14-2 in the third to seemingly take control, but . . .

Each side shot .333 from the field. But Maquoketa Valley shot eight more free throws, and made six more and that turned out to be decisive in a three-point win.

The Bravettes had a 28-18 lead in rebounds.

But Montezuma made 20 turnovers, to Maquoketa Valley’s 7.

Vivian Cook led Bravettes scorers with 10 points. Shiressa Wetering had 9, and Ellen Cook scored 7.

Grace Richter scored 14 for Maquoketa Valley, while Bianka Ronnebaum had 10.

The Bravettes fell to 0-3 on the season, while Maquoketa Valley left at 2-0.

UP NEXT – Montezuma will take on its first Class 1A opponent, but it’s a good one, Lynnville-Sully, on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at their place. It starts at 6 p.m., with the first boys game of the season to follow.
