Monte girls squeeze L-S on defense

When they played in Sully on Dec. 3, Montezuma, trailing by six points through three quarters, erupted for a 25-15 fourth and a 45-41 win.

This time there was no Montezuma comeback. There was no need.

The Bravettes’ suffocating defense was the reason. Montezuma led the rest of the way after a 10-10 first quarter in a 45-29 victory over the Hawks on Montezuma’s floor on Friday, Jan. 21.

All 10 of Montezuma’s first quarter points were scored by post players and that’s not the norm for the Bravettes.

Junior guard Mia Boulton was having trouble getting touches against Lynnville-Sully’s own defense.

That post-guard ratio changed abruptly. Montezuma kept the ball moving and a flow developed. Bravette guards scored 9 of the team’s 11 second quarter points.

Izzy Roorda, with the ball near the baseline, looks for help against Lynnville-Sully.

Meanwhile, Lynnville-Sully had problems against a bothersome press in full court, and a half-court defense that made the lane a no-fly zone for the Hawks.

Montezuma led 21-16 at halftime, then opened it up with a 22-7 third quarter that left them free and mostly clear at 43-23 though three.

Seven Bravettes scored, with of them putting in between 5 and 13 points.

Post forward Shanae Wetering led with 15. Guard Ellen Cook scored 7. Getting 6 each were post Shiressa Cook, and forward Korrinn Kehoe, while guard Jadyn Sharer had four.

Guard Madison Johannes scored 6 points.

The win took the Bravettes to 13-2 overall and to 11-1 against South Iowa Cedar League opponents.

Lynnville-Sully is at 9-9 and 6-7.
