GRIMES – Montezuma was well-represented, on the court and on the bench, at the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association Pizza Hut All-Star games on Saturday, March 27, at Dallas Center-Grimes High School.
These are games for selected seniors from all classes around the state.
Elise Boulton, Dylan Holland, Trey Shearer and Cole Watts represented Montezuma.
Coaches Janel Burgess and Derrick Dengler were on the bench and Assistant Coach Greg Long was there, too.
In addition, Rex Baker was there on clock, and Barb Baker was there on scorebook.
The Montezuma players competed in two games each, while Boulton and Shearer competed in a three-point shooting contest.
At the end of the day, Shearer was named to the boys all-tournament team.
In girls play, Boulton scored eight points and Holland did not score as their Southeast all-stars lost 67-63 to the Northeast.
In the consolation game, Holland scored six points and Boulton had five as the Southeast lost 69-67 to the Northwest.
In boys play, Shearer scored 19 points and Watts scored 12 as the Southeast team lost 130 to 90 to the Northeast.
In the consolation game, Shearer scored 19 and Watts had 15 in a 136-106 loss to the Northwest. In that game, Watts dropped in five three-point baskets, while Shearer had three.
Statistics other than points were not officially kept.
In the three-point shooting contest, Boulton and Shearer both advanced to the semifinals before falling.
Contestants fired up 25 three-point attempts in each round.
Boulton made 15 in the first round and 13 in the semis.
Shearer knocked down 21 in the first round and 19 in the semis.
The day was about meeting players from around the state and having fun.
