With an objective of gradually improving, this has been a successful track and field season for the nine guys on Montezuma High School’s varsity team.
Monday night, May 10, at the Darrell Brand Coed Invitational, they put up their best team finish – third, out of six – and their highest point total in a meet – 86.
Eli Bustamante was in the winner’s circle four times and Brydon Henning put himself there three times, the most a distance man can do.
Bustamante won the 100-meter dash in 11.88 seconds and the 200 in 24.70. He won the high jump at 5-6.
Bustamante finished by leading off for Montezuma’s winning 4×400 relay. The other runners were Marty Knox, Garrett Watts, and Henning.
Henning won the 800 and the 1,600 for the Braves, in addition to that anchor leg in the 4×400.
Carter McKee won the 3,200 for the Braves, and joined with Jayden Ross for a one-two Montezuma finish.
It was the same in the long jump, with Marty Knox winning at 16-5, just one inch behind Watts’ effort.
UP NEXT – The Braves are at the state meet qualifier on Thursday, May 13, starting at 4 p.m. in Belle Plaine.
IF YOU’RE GOING – You must purchase tickets online before the meet. They will NOT be sold at the gate in Belle Plaine. (See the school’s website for details).
