Montezuma golfers are state-bound!

ANITA – It’s history!

Montezuma’s boys team has golfed its way to the state tournament for the first time!

That was the bottom line result for the Braves at the Monday, May 15 District tournament at Crestwood Hills Golf Club.

If you heard sirens in the 6 p.m. hour on Monday, that was the golf team being welcomed by the Montezuma Fire Department!

In order to qualify as a team, a school had to place first or second at the district meet.

As you can see from the photo below, the Braves are holding a state banner.

Having said that, we must tell you Montezuma finished third.

The state has a rule that if the hosting team – in this case CAM-Anita – places first or second – they did – then the third place team also goes to state. Good planning that they had an extra qualifying banner!

Right now, that doesn’t matter. The Braves are going! The state golf t-shirts have been designed and can be ordered online. “We’re just super-relieved and excited to make it past the District meet and play at state for the first time in school history as a team,” Coach Liesl Roorda said.

Montezuma’s best score was a 76, fired by senior Maguire De Jong. It was the sixth best score of the day. Other Braves scores: Owen Cook 81, Cruz De Jong 83, Jack Erselius 88, Max Anderson 90 and Brady Boulton 100.

The state meet will be Monday and Tuesday, May 22-23, at Ames Golf and Country Club.
